Δίδυμος ὁ Τυφλός ὁ Ἀλεξανδρεύς
Didymus the Blind of Alexandria
37 works

Didymus the Blind was a major Christian theologian and teacher in Alexandria during the 4th century CE. He lost his sight as a young child but became a profoundly learned scholar through oral teaching and tactile learning aids. He led the Catechetical School in Alexandria for approximately fifty years, teaching influential students like Jerome and Rufinus. Didymus lived as a dedicated ascetic, never marrying, and was a staunch defender of the Nicene understanding of God.

He was an extraordinarily prolific writer, though many of his works are now lost. His writings included extensive commentaries on biblical books such as Genesis, Psalms, and the Gospel of John, applying the allegorical interpretive methods associated with Origen. He also authored doctrinal treatises, including On the Holy Spirit, which defended the divinity of the Spirit, and a systematic work On the Trinity.

Didymus is historically significant as a central intellectual link between the theology of Origen and later Christian tradition. His massive exegetical output helped shape biblical interpretation, and his doctrinal works contributed to the development of Trinitarian theology. Despite his contemporary prestige, his association with Origen’s thought led to his posthumous condemnation in the 6th century, causing many of his Greek works to be lost. Their rediscovery on papyri in the 20th century has revived scholarly interest in his contributions.
