Life Boethus of Tarsus (Βοήθους ὁ Ταρσεύς) was a Greek poet active in the 1st century BCE. His biography is obscure, recorded only by the preservation of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology [1]. He should be distinguished from the Stoic philosopher Boethus of Sidon, a student of Diogenes of Babylon [2].
Works His sole attested work is an epigram in the Greek Anthology (Book 9, Epigram 235), a dedicatory poem to Pan and the Nymphs for the salvation of a ship from a storm [1]. No other poems or collections are documented.
Significance Boethus is a minor figure whose significance lies in his contribution to the corpus of Hellenistic epigrammatic poetry. His surviving epigram provides a concise example of the dedicatory genre from his period.
