Hephaestion of Thebes (Ἡφαιστίων ὁ Θηβαῖος) was a Greco-Egyptian astrologer active around 380 CE during the reign of the emperor Arcadius (r. 395–408) [1]. He originated from Thebes in Egypt, a noted center for astrological study in late antiquity.
His major work is the Apotelesmatika (Ἀποτελεσματικά), a comprehensive astrological compendium that survives in full. A shorter epitome of this text also exists [1].
The Apotelesmatika is a systematic synthesis of earlier Hellenistic doctrine, drawing on authorities like Ptolemy and Dorotheus of Sidon [1]. It covers natal, catarchic, and interrogational astrology. The work’s primary significance lies in its role as a crucial conduit for preserving Greek astrological knowledge, transmitting it into the Byzantine and medieval Arabic traditions and providing a detailed view of late antique astrological practice [1].
