Hypermenes the Historian (Ὑπερμένης ὁ ἱστορικός)
Life No biographical details for a historian named Hypermenes from the 2nd century CE are attested. The name appears in earlier contexts, such as a son of Aegyptus in Apollodorus’s Bibliotheca [1] and as an Olympic victor in 472 BCE [2], but these refer to distinct mythological and early historical figures.
Works He is credited with one historical work, but no title, fragment, or citation survives. Standard reference works, including the Oxford Classical Dictionary and Brill’s New Pauly, do not list him [3, 4].
Significance Hypermenes the Historian lacks any secure place in the historical record. He is never cited by later ancient authors and plays no role in modern discussions of Greek historiography under the Roman Empire.
