Thrasyllus the Historian (Θράσυλλος ὁ Ἱστορικός) Life Thrasyllus was a Greek historian of the late 4th or early 3rd century BCE. No biographical details survive beyond his identification as a historian. His existence is attested solely by a single fragment of his work preserved by the later author Athenaeus [1].
Works His only known work is On Islands (Περὶ νήσων), which is now lost. The single extant fragment, from Athenaeus’s Deipnosophistae (11.470e), concerns the island of Samos [1].
Significance Thrasyllus is a minor figure within Hellenistic historiography and periegetic literature. He exemplifies the many lost local historians whose works were mined by later compilers. His direct influence is untraceable due to the complete loss of his writing [1].
